International Cannabinoids Symposium: 10 March 2008, UK
November 1, 2007 – 11:43 am | posted in Pharma IndustryThe Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain will be hosting a joint symposium with the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences titled Cannabinoid Medicines on 10 March 2008. The symposium will explore cannabis-derived medications and novel opportunities in drug discovery.
There is considerable global interest in the medical benefits of cannabis and related compounds for the treatment of a whole variety of conditions including arthritis, multiple sclerosis and neurological pain. Some 500 cannabis metabolites have currently been identified, and in 2006 an experimental license was granted in Canada for a cannabis-derived product for the management of multiple sclerosis symptoms. Recent evidence highlights that cannabis may contain other bioactive constituents.
Cannabinoid Medicines will feature an international panel of speakers, chaired by Professor Michael Heinrich from the University of London, and will cover a range of subjects including:
- The multiple roles of endocannabinoids
- Metabolomics approaches in cannabis research
- Cannabis derived medicines in the treatment of chronic inflammatory conditions
- The cannabinoid receptors: where do they lead us?
- Clinical research on cannabis derived medicines
- Safety of cannabis-based medicines
The symposium will be of interest to researchers in drug discovery, pharmacognosy, natural product biology, pharmacology and clinical studies, and those with an interest in the management of chronic diseases such as multiple sclerosis, chronic inflammatory conditions and illnesses associated with chronic pain.
