Republican Candidates’ Position On Abortion Focus Of Campaigns Ahead Of Iowa Straw Poll, Washington Times Reports
August 14, 2007 – 12:02 pm | posted in AbortionRepublican presidential candidates’ positions on abortion have been a focus of their campaigns ahead of the Iowa Republican Party straw poll, which is scheduled for Saturday, the Washington Times reports. According to the Times, presidential candidates estimate that between 60% and 70% of Republican caucus voters are against abortion rights and vote for abortion-rights opponents. In addition, more than 60% of caucus attendees are dedicated advocates focused on getting like-minded people to turn out to vote for candidates opposed to abortion rights.
A 2006 poll of potential caucus attendees found that 61% said they vote for abortion-rights opponents and 11% said they vote for abortion-rights supporters. About 25% of respondents said a candidate’s position on abortion “doesn’t matter.” According to the Times, no “strong, credible candidate” who supports abortion rights has “emerged in the modern era — until this year,” with the “rise” of former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.
“If I’m Giuliani’s strategist, I’m saying, there’s 39 percent that this issue doesn’t matter to, and George Bush won the Iowa caucuses with about 40 percent eight years ago, and Bob Dole won them with about 30 percent,” Steve Grubbs — president of Victory Enterprises, which conducted the poll of caucus attendees — said (Dinan, Washington Times, 8/9).
