Most People Satisfied With Their Health Insurance Plans, Consumer Reports Finds

Sixty-seven percent of respondents to a Consumer Reports survey said they were completely or very satisfied with their health insurance plans, up from 64% last year, according to the September issue of the magazine, the Hartford Courant reports. Mark Kotkin, director of survey research at Consumer Reports National Research Center, said, “Most people are fairly well satisfied on average.”

The results are based on answers provided by 25,560 PPO members and 11,800 HMO members concerning their experiences between May 2005 and April 2006. Readers were asked to rate their plans on a six-point scale of satisfaction on issues such as choice of doctors, care received, billing and processing of claims, and access to physicians. A score of 80 indicates members are “very satisfied,” and a score of 60 means “fairly satisfied,” according to Consumer Reports.

The top-rated PPO — out of 46 — was Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Connecticut, with a score of 83, compared with a national average of 76. The national satisfaction average for HMOs was 79 (Levick, Hartford Courant, 8/7).
