AWHONN Honored As Premier Provider Of Continuing Nursing Education, USA

The Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) has been awarded the inaugural 2007 Accreditation Premier Program Award from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), acknowledging AWHONN for its excellence and innovation in the provision of Continuing Nursing Education (CNE). The Premier program was created to “recognize accredited continuing nursing education providers that continually raise the bar for quality and employ cutting edge CNE practices”, according to the ANCC.

AWHONN was the only professional membership association awarded the designation, which lasts for two years, and only one other CNE provider, Nursing Spectrum, was also honored. As a premier CNE provider, AWHONN will be expected to mentor other CNE programs, provide and disseminate best practices and assist in advancing accredited CNE

“AWHONN has long been committed to developing evidence-based nursing education programs and clinical practice guidelines utilizing the best available science and learning models. It is a respected leader in advancing the nursing profession and it is humbled to be the recipient of this first ever award from the American Nurses Credentialing Center acknowledging our premier status as a CNE provider,” said AWHONN Executive Director Joseph Isaacs. “We hope that this honor will help us to further our reach to nurses that will value the high quality education we consistently deliver.”

Particularly highlighted by ANCC was AWHONN’s fetal heart monitoring education program. Launched in 1993, AWHONN provides this training at the introductory, intermediate and advanced levels. The program has achieved national recognition in obstetric and neonatal practice and has expanded over the years from 28 workshops educating 357 participants to a current force of nearly 2,000 instructors educating more than 10,000 participants annually throughout the United States and Canada.

AWHONN’s program is the primary monitoring education program for large health care systems in the U.S. Since its inception, nearly 80,000 practitioners have participated in the intermediate course alone. In Illinois and elsewhere, those who complete the program successfully are entitled to reduced malpractice insurance premiums.
