Report Profiles Underinsured; Web Exclusive Discusses SCHIP, Medicaid Reauthorization

Why Four in 10 Americans Can’t Depend on Their Health Insurance,” Consumer Reports: The report, based on a May 2007 survey by the Consumer Reports National Research Center, found that 24% of the U.S. population is underinsured, and 43% of people who have health insurance said they were “somewhat” to “completely” unprepared to deal with a costly medical emergency in the next year. The report also discusses the costs and effects of people being underinsured and creates a profile of the underinsured (Consumer Reports release, 8/7).
“Dynamics in Medicaid and SCHIP Eligibility Among Children in SCHIP’s Early Years: Implications for Reauthorization,” Health Affairs: The Health Affairs Web exclusive examines SCHIP and Medicaid eligibility and coverage interruptions for children because of income fluctuations. The report also discusses SCHIP reauthorization and the need for Congress to ensure that states have adequate tools and funding to enroll eligible children in the programs and provide uninterrupted coverage (Sommers et al., Health Affairs, 8/7).
