Diabetes Week Success Story, UK

Diabetes Week 2007 was a huge success across the country.

Between 10 and 16 June, Diabetes UK supporters worked tirelessly to raise funds for the charity and heighten awareness of diabetes.

Here are just a few highlights from the week.

Specsavers, who have made us their charity of the year for 2007, raised an outstanding £174,000 to mark Diabetes Week. Stores across the country made a donation from each sight test they carried out during June and sold wristbands and badges to reach this amazing fundraising total.

Over £60,000 was raised by enthusiastic collection-box shakers asking generous supporters to donate their spare coins. This brilliant achievement shows just how small change really can make a big difference.

ASDA held a health promotion day where over 60 staff had their blood glucose levels tested.

The leading supermarket also gave out over 66,000 information leaflets during the week through their pharmacies - a great awareness-raising initiative.

Our sponsored Walk in the Park events have been bigger and better than ever. Coronation Street’s Kym Ryder kicked off a summer of walks on 10 June in London’s Regent’s Park.

United Co-op displayed Diabetes Week posters in their shops and played adverts on their in-store radio, encouraging people to donate during the week.

“Diabetes UK would like to thank all the individual supporters and corporate partners who helped to make Diabetes Week such a success,” said Douglas Smallwood, Chief Executive of Diabetes UK.

“Your support is vital in helping us to improve the lives of people with diabetes and work towards finding a cure for the condition.”
