ANA And The International Centre On Nurse Migration Host Internationally Recruited Nurses: Creating Positive Practice Environments

Focusing on creating positive work environments for internationally recruited nurses, the American Nurses Association (ANA) and the International Centre on Nurse Migration will hold a conference on Internationally Recruited Nurses: Creating Positive Practice Environments, August 5-7, 2007 in Chicago, IL.

This conference will provide nurse leaders, executives and managers, strategies and methods to integrate internationally recruited nurses into the workforce.

“We’ll address the underlying challenges of recruitment and retention amongst existing registered nursing staff and international nurses to ensure a more stable workforce for the future, emphasizing team work, reducing turnover and supporting high quality nursing care - issues that are critical to ensure that patient safety and quality care are priorities in the nursing world,” remarked ANA President Rebecca M. Patton, MSN, RN, CNOR.

The International Centre on Nurse Migration, a joint initiative of the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS International) and the International Council of Nurses, serves as a global resource for the development, promotion and dissemination of research, policy and information on nurse migration. The challenges of integrating the international nurse stem from issues of nurse competence and the work environment. There will be an open discussion moderated by nurse leaders on what programs and practices are in place to fully integrate nurses in their new work environment.

“This is the third conference the Centre has sponsored on Creating Positive Practice Environments for Internationally Recruited Nurses, the first one being held in London in 2006 and the other being held in the United States in 2007. The outcomes of the three conferences will be combined and shared with audiences interested in this important topic going forward,” said Barbara Nichols, DHL, MS, RN, FAAN, Office of the Secretariat, International Centre on Nurse Migration and CEO, CGFNS International.

Patton will be among the conference’s distinguished speakers. She will be joined by prominent guest speakers and researchers from around the world. Peter Buerhaus, PhD, RN, FAAN will be the keynote speaker. Buerhaus is currently the Valere Potter Distinguished Professor of Nursing and Director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Health Workforce Studies at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Other speakers include: Rita Adeniran, MSN, RN, CMAC, Global Nurse Ambassador Department of Nursing Development and Education & School of Nursing, University of Pennsylvania; Marilyn Chapman, Mercy Hospital and Medical Center and two internationally recruited nurses, Zepure Boyadjian-Samawi, MSN, DNSc, RN and Gloria Simon, RN.
