Medical Institute: Extension Of Title V Funding Important For The Health And Well-Being Of Children

The Medical Institute, a leader in providing science-based sexual health information, recently praised House members for voting to extend the Title V abstinence education program until September 2007.

As reported by The Washington Times, The House on Wednesday voted 291-126 to extend until September 30 the federal Title V abstinence education program along with the Transitional Medical Assistance program, which provides Medicaid coverage to families leaving welfare. This decision follows a July 13th report published by the Federal Interagency Forum on Child and Family Statistics showing that the number of students reporting having had sex is declining.

“We applaud the bipartisan action of the House of Representatives,” said Gary Rose, M.D., President and CEO of the Medical Institute. “In following the Senate’s approval last month it is clear that a majority of U.S. political leaders understand the important impact a strong abstinence message has on young people.

“Educating young people on methods of sexual risk reduction - such as condoms and regular testing - is important and has its place, but the healthiest medical choice is risk avoidance - abstinence. Extending Title V funding through September was a good decision that will protect the health and well-being of thousands of young people. But we must not stop there. It is critically important that funding for abstinence education continues through the entire 2007 - 2008 school year.”
