Brownback Questions Whether Rape Survivors Should Be Allowed To Receive Abortions
June 14, 2007 – 6:26 pm | posted in Abortion, Women's Health / OBGYNSen. Sam Brownback (R-Kan.), who is running for the Republican presidential nomination, on Saturday before the National Catholic Men’s Conference in Taylors, S.C., questioned whether rape survivors should be allowed to receive abortions, the AP/Houston Chronicle reports.
Brownback, who is Roman Catholic said, “Rape is terrible. Rape is awful. Is it made any better by killing an innocent child? Does it solve the problem for the woman that’s been raped?” He added, “We need to protect innocent life. Period.”
Brownback was the only presidential candidate invited to the conference. Steve Wood, president of Family Life Center International, said the event was about families and not politics, adding that Brownback was there to speak about bringing his faith into public life (Davenport, AP/Houston Chronicle, 6/9).
