ANF Welcomes School Health Check Plan, Australia

The Australian Nursing Federation has welcomed Federal Labor’s commitment to the introduction of a national health check for all children starting school.

‘Promoting healthy lifestyles and early intervention to address problems is essential if children are to have a good education and eventually be productive members of the community,’ said ANF Federal Secretary Jill Iliffe.

Some states already have school screening programs but a nationally consistent approach would be beneficial, Ms Iliffe said.

‘A national school health check should build on the maternal and child health services already available for babies and young infants and lead to further screening throughout school for a whole of life approach to health.

‘It is important however that follow up services are available when problems are identified, such as dental care, speech pathologists, dieticians and school counsellors. These must be easily accessed at a cost families can meet.’

The ANF, representing 150,000 members, is the professional and industrial voice for nurses in Australia .
