Dr Gill Morgan, chief executive of the NHS Confederation which represents over 90 per cent of NHS organisations, said:
“Today’s announcement of measures to help patients choose where to be treated are good news for patients and the NHS staff that help them make informed choices. NHS leaders will also welcome the introduction of free choice for hip operations and orthopaedic treatment a year ahead of schedule.
“A key lesson from the extended choice pilots was that GPs and patients need to have access to high quality information in order to make informed choices about their treatment. We hope that the measures in today’s announcement, including a website and trained librarians, will aide both patients and their GPs when choosing where to go for their care. However, we believe that GPs should retain the pivotal role in supporting their patients to make these choices.
“The NHS has a long way to go to provide patients with clear and easy to understand information about NHS providers. This is a good step in the right direction. The priority for the future must be not only to provide patients with information on factors such as cleanliness, convenience and waiting times, but also to provide them with information on quality of care and outcomes.
“It is also important that we move towards directly comparable information for all providers including the independent sector and the traditional NHS.”
The NHS Confederation represents more than 90% of the organisations that make up the NHS. Its members include the majority of NHS acute trusts, ambulance trusts, foundation trusts, mental health trusts, primary care trusts, special health authorities and strategic health authorities in England; trusts and local health boards in Wales; and health and social service trusts and boards in Northern Ireland.
