Mexico City Lawmakers Who Vote In Favor Of Bill To Legalize Abortion Will Be Excommunicated If Measure Passes, Bishop Says

Marcelino Hernandez, auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Mexico, on Wednesday said that if a proposed Mexico City bill that would legalize abortions during the first three months passes, any lawmaker who voted in favor of the measure would be excommunicated from the Roman Catholic Church when the first abortion was performed under the law, the AP/USA Today reports (AP/USA Today, 4/4). Lawmakers from Mexico’s Party of the Democratic Revolution recently proposed the measure. The party holds Mexico City’s mayorship and the majority in the city’s Legislature, and party members are confident that the bill will pass. Under current Mexican law, abortion is permitted only if the life of the pregnant woman is endangered or if the woman has been raped (Kaiser Daily Women’s Health Policy Report, 3/29). Hernandez reiterated the Catholic Church’s opposition to abortion, adding that “life is not subject to a vote.” He said that lawmakers voting for the legislation would not automatically separate themselves from the church. According to the AP/USA Today, a majority of Mexicans are “nominally” Catholic, but it is unclear how many Mexico City lawmakers practice Catholicism (AP/USA Today, 4/4).
