Puget Sound Health Alliance Will Adopt National Health Care Goals, Receives Federal Recognition

HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt on Wednesday named the Washington-based Puget Sound Health Alliance the first organization in the U.S. to become part of a national network intended to provide affordable health care and improve patient care, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports. According to its Web site, the alliance is a “partnership involving employers, physicians, hospitals, patients, health plans and others working together to improve quality and efficiency while reducing the rate of health care costs.” Leavitt named the alliance a Community Leader for Value-Driven Health Care, meaning it will collaborate with local health care providers and consumers to reduce costs and improve care. In addition, the alliance will support four national health care goals on the local level:

  • Adopting electronic health records;
  • Establishing comprehensive quality measures for providers;
  • Developing a system to allow consumers to compare cost and quality data for routine and elective procedures; and
  • Providing incentives for providers to offer low-cost, quality care or offering insurance plans that provide incentives for consumers who make choices based on quality and cost (Black, Seattle Post-Intelligencer, 1/4).

The alliance in mid-2007 is expected to release its first public report cards for health clinics. Leavitt said HHS has qualified the alliance to include Medicare patient information in its database, which could make performance ratings more accurate. In addition, Gov. Christine Gregoire (D) said her proposed fiscal year 2007-2009 budget would include funds to help the alliance include statewide claims data in its assessments (Seattle Post-Intelligencer, 1/4).
