When the “Think About Your Drink” campaign launches today in Washington, D.C. and ten other major cities, it will be backed by weighty research showing that beverages supply nearly one quarter (22 percent) of Americans’ total calories, making drink choice a significant factor in how much Americans weigh and the overall quality of their diets.
Rachel Johnson, professor of nutrition and dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at the University of Vermont played a key role in the development of the report. Johnson, who has extensive media experience (including on-camera), will be available for interview today.
Johnson’s research on the effects of both flavored milk and soft drinks on children’s diets has been widely published in the academic and popular press. She received the 2001 Award for Excellence in Research from the American Dietetic Association Foundation, is senior nutrition advisor and frequent contributor to Eating Well magazine, and was recently appointed to the American Heart Association’s Nutrition Committee.
