Clinical indicators of influenza activity have remained stable in England but have increased in Scotland. Both are below clinical baseline thresholds. Clinical figures for Wales and Northern Ireland are unavailable for week 51/06.
Reports of influenza A and B from NHS and HPA laboratories are also at low levels. Laboratory confirmed infections of Respiratory Syncitial Virus (RSV) are increasing but remain at levels below those recorded last season (2005/2006). RSV has been detected from three community specimens sent to the Respiratory Virus Unit (RVU) at the Centre for Infections during week 51/06. Two were from central England and one from southern England. Influenza was detected in a single community sample from southern England. This proved to be an influenza A(H3) subtype.
The avian influenza A (H5N1) outbreaks in Asia continue to be monitored by the Health Protection Agency. The World Health Organisation (WHO) reports the total number of human cases worldwide to be 258, of which 154 (60%) have died.
