GP Shortage Already Here, Says GP Chairman, UK
January 4, 2007 – 6:44 pm | posted in Primary CareDr Hamish Meldrum, chairman of the BMA’s GPs Committee, commenting on the draft NHS Pay and workforce strategy documents highlighted in Health Service Journal today (04/01/07) , said:
“The UK has been short of GPs for years and is still under-doctored in many areas. While we do not accept that GP supply and demand are currently evenly matched, it is alarming to note that even the Department of Health is now expecting a shortfall of 1,200 GPs in the coming years. In this context it is appalling that there are still significant cuts in education budgets and other initiatives such as flexible career and returner schemes to recruit more GPs into the workforce. We fully support a further expansion in GP training and also demand an immediate reinstatement of measures to encourage qualified family doctors back into the profession.”
