Iowa Businesses Advocate Pooling For Lower Health Insurance Premiums

The Iowa Association of Business and Industry plans to lobby lawmakers in the upcoming 2007 legislative session to allow businesses to join together to form health insurance purchasing pools, the Des Moines Register reports. The association represents 1,200 Iowa businesses that employ 300,000 people. Purchasing pools can help businesses reduce health care costs by allowing them to negotiate for lower premiums, as well as receive incentives for providing wellness initiatives to their employees, the Register reports. ABI Chair Toby Shine said, “Employers are seeking innovative ways to continue to afford health insurance.” According to ABI President Michael Ralston, group members already have begun preliminary talks with insurance companies about creating health insurance purchasing pools, and insurers have indicated “a willingness to explore all sorts of options” (Dinnen, Des Moines Register, 12/21).
