Teen Drug Use Declining But Demand For Treatment Increasing
December 23, 2006 – 4:23 pm | posted in Alcohol / Addiction, Pediatrics, Public HealthThe annual Monitoring the Future survey (by the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the University of Michigan) released today points to a continued decline across the nation in teen drug use.
Other trends in drug use in northern Illinois, according to experts from Rosecrance Health Network, a premier residential and outpatient substance abuse treatment center include:
– A delay in the use of drugs, which means early prevention efforts do work, especially when teens understand the dangers of drug use. When kids delay the use of drugs they are reducing the potential for developing an addiction.
– Teens coming in for treatment today have very complex issues and often are using a variety of drugs, including increased use of opiates.
– Heroin use is increasing amongst adolescents who may start out inhaling or smoking it.
– More teens are getting treated for substance abuse addictions, so demand for services is increasing.
