American Red Cross Responds To Typhoon In Philippines
December 5, 2006 – 1:12 pm | posted in Aid / DisastersThe American Red Cross has responded to Typhoon Durian, super-typhoon that swept across the Philippines late last week. According to recent reports, hundreds have died and more than 450,000 have been affected. The typhoon caused widespread flooding, damaged property and unleashed landslides. In some areas, the typhoon generated winds up to 190 miles per hour. Heavy rains continue to fall, which threaten to cause further landslides.
An emergency response has been launched and assessment teams are on the ground. Immediate needs include food, water, medicine and basic health services, blankets, tents, shelter and other supplies.
The American Red Cross has an emergency relief worker in the Philippines, who has been conducting relief operations for Typhoon Durian. She was deployed to the Philippines to serve as Operations Coordinator for the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement response to the earlier typhoons and will remain in her post to provide additional support.
The American Red Cross provided more than $200,000 to assist earlier typhoon response efforts and may increase its assistance over the coming days. Potential options include financial contributions and the provision of personnel, supplies, technical assistance and tracing services.
