NEJM Perspective Piece Examines Realignment Of Inpatient Medicare Reimbursement Rate

Recalibrating Medicare Payments for Inpatient Care,” New England Journal of Medicine: In a NEJM perspective piece, Paul Ginsburg — president of the Center for Studying Health System Change in Washington, D.C. — discusses the Medicare reimbursement rate recalculation for inpatient services mandated by CMS in August. Ginsburg discusses reasons for variation in profitability for different services and the effect of specialty hospitals on reimbursements. According to Ginsburg, policy must be established to “ensure more accurate payment methods,” or “providers will increasingly gravitate toward the medical problems and procedures that boost their bottom line,” rather than provide other needed medical care (Ginsburg, NEJM, 11/16).
